GROUNDED – A monthly moment of reflection, drawn from the teachings of yoga

This Month’s Reflection: Santosha (Contentment)

Last month we explored Ahimsa – the practice of being gentle with ourselves.
This month we move to Santosha – contentment.

Santosha isn’t about pretending everything’s fine or never wanting things to change.
It’s about finding a quiet steadiness in the present moment – even if it’s imperfect.
Especially when it’s imperfect.

After cancer, it’s easy to live in the “when” space:
“When I’m stronger…”
“When my energy’s back…”
“When I feel like myself again…”

There’s nothing wrong with hope or goals, but if we’re always waiting for life to be different before we let ourselves enjoy it, we can miss the moments we do have.

Santosha invites us to notice what’s here now – without needing to fix, rush, or measure it against the past.
It’s finding comfort in small things: a good cup of tea, a phone call with a friend, a walk where the air feels just right.
It’s remembering that joy and peace can co-exist with uncertainty and change.

Try this:
At the end of each day this week, name three things – big or small – that brought you a sense of ease, joy, or gratitude. You might be surprised at how these little moments add up.

Contentment doesn’t mean standing still.
It means living fully, even while the journey continues.
