The power of active rest

I teach a weekly Yoga Nidra class for cardiac and cancer rehab patients, and every week they remind me why this practice matters so much.

Yoga Nidra – sometimes called “yogic sleep” – is rooted in Buddhist and Hindu traditions and is a guided practice that sits between wakefulness and sleep. Have you tried it?

It calms the nervous system, lowers stress, and can even have measurable physical benefits. (The Independent recently wrote about it here.

Over time, their feedback has been incredible, and surprising too, even though I understand the science behind it.

Many say they’d be “mortified” if the class stopped, seeing it as a barometer for how they’re feeling each week.

One participant has even achieved a significant decrease in her blood pressure through regular practice.

We all live in such a fast-paced world that resting, until recently, was considered ’slacking’ and taking time to find deep rest like this was a bit woo-woo. I was one of those people!

But small, consistent moments of rest like this can make a real difference.

Each week they remind me that rest isn’t passive – it’s restorative, healing, and deeply powerful.

💬 If you’ve tried Yoga Nidra, I’d love to hear what impact it’s had on you.
